Research in the Ramakrishnan Lab aims to understand how vesicular communication networks drive critical physiological processes, from endocrine regulation to neural signaling. Major focus areas include the molecular mechanisms of dense core vesicle secretion for neuropeptides and insulin, the complex dynamics of neuron-islet communication, and the broader physiological roles of extracellular vesicles. Our approach is multi-faceted and highly interdisciplinary, operating at the intersection of cellular physiology and nanobiology. To understand these communication networks at the cellular and tissue levels, we rely on advanced molecular, biochemical, and high-resolution imaging techniques to track vesicle fusion and exocytosis in real-time. Uniquely, our biological investigations are  driven by  our in-house development of cutting-edge lab-on-a-chip platforms entirely, empowering us to manipulate, isolate, and analyze cellular communication with unprecedented spatiotemporal precision.
